Wärtsilä engines to propel South African
research vessel

STX The Antarctic research vessel delivered to South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs will be propelled by four Wärtsilä 32 engines.
Wärtsilä has signed a contract with STX Finland Oy shipyard in Rauma to deliver four Wärtsilä 32 engines for an Antarctic polar supply and research vessel. The owner of the vessel will be South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs.

The vessel’s crew will be trained at the Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy in Turku. News about the contract between Wärtsilä and STX Finland were published in November last year.

The ice-strengthened vessel will be approximately 134 metres long and it will accommodate 45 members of crew and about 100 researchers and passengers. Construction of the vessel began in January 2010 and the engine deliveries are scheduled to take place in February 2011. The vessel will be completed by March 2012.
