Wärtsilä delivers power generating equipment to Canada

articlesbase.com The demand on natural gas retrieved from shale deposits has grown strongly in Canada and the United States.

Wärtsilä, a global supplier of decentralized power plant solutions, will deliver power generating equipment and associated engineering for a power generation project in British Columbia, Canada. The contract comprises three Wärtsilä 20V34SG gas engine generator sets running on natural gas, which produce a combined output of over 26 megawatts.

The power plant will provide electricity to a processing plant, which produces natural gas from one of the most prolific shale gas formations in North America, located in the Horn River Basin. The power plant will run on the natural gas provided by the natural gas processing plant.

The strong demand on shale gas is a fairly recent phenomenon in Canada and the United States. It has been spurred on by new horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies.

Gas from shale deposits has become an increasingly important source of natural gas over the last decade and is viewed as a key supply source for the future. For example in the United States the shale gas discoveries and other unconventional natural gas resources are expected to provide more than 100 years of supply, resulting in stabilized natural gas pricing.

There is currently no electrical grid to provide electricity in this part of British Columbia, which makes on-site generation a necessity.
