Wärtsila delivers a new power plant to the island of Rhodes

Rhodes holidays The new power plant is needed for securing electricity production on the popular tourist island.
Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply the equipment and engineering for a new 119 megawatt power plant for the island of Rhodes in Greece. The order has been placed by the main contractor of the project, Terna S.A., one of the major building and energy contractors in Greece.

Wärtsilä is the leading supplier of power solutions to the islands of the Eastern Mediterranean, and the company’s latest order to Rhodes further strengthens that position. When installed, the new power plant will bring the total output of electricity produced by Wärtsilä engines in the Greek islands to 690 megawatts, which represents a majority share of the archipelago’s baseload supply.

The new power station will generate electricity for the island’s grid from seven engines running on heavy fuel oil. Wärtsilä’s solution includes also emissions cleaning technology system, and the readiness to convert the engines to run on gas.
