Vaisala contributes to the rescue of the Baltic Sea in Pärnu
Lehtikuva/Pekka Sakki Vaisala takes part in the rescue operations of the Baltic Sea by developing a hydrological forecasting system, which is based on open source technology.Expert in environmental and industrial measurement, Vaisala will deliver a hydrological forecasting system for the Pärnu River basin in Estonia. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Estonian Meteorological and Hydrological Institute and Tallinn Technical University.
Once the project is completed, the data provided by the system will be used for monitoring the rainfall and water quality of the Pärnu River. Draining directly into the Gulf of Riga, the Pärnu River has a direct influence on the water quality of the Baltic Sea, which makes water quality and quantity monitoring particularly important.
Vaisala's hydrological forecasting system utilizes public domain information and it is based on open source technology, which enables the low cost duplication of the system for other river basins draining into the Baltic Sea. A prototype system is already up and running and an associated public web interface will follow early next year.
The development of the hydrological forecasting system is Vaisala's contribution to the operations of the Baltic Sea Action Group, in which all involved organizations work together towards rescuing the endangered marine ecosystem of the Baltic Sea.
