Finland’s leading forest product company UPM plants trees in Finland, China, Russia, Britain and the United States. In Finland and Britain the event has been timed to take place during the Environment Online, ENO-initiative’s Tree Planting Day on May 22nd.

In Finland the school children taking part in the initiative are invited to forests owned by UPM. These forests are located in Janakkala, Joensuu and Jyväskylä. The pupils plant trees and have a chance to meet experts and discuss issues of forest environment and timber as raw material.

Near Novgorod in Russia 16 500 pine seedlings have been planted by 90 UPM’s employees. In Minnesota, USA, 250 sixth grade pupils have planted a small forest and 1000 pine seedlings to reduce erosion. UPM has also decided to give a donation to the China Green Fund, which will plant 10 000 trees on behalf of UPM. The trees will planted next to the Great Wall of China near Peijing on the International Environment Day on June 5th.

The tree species, which are planted, are typical to the local environments. Local tree species have a great significance for instance to the nesting of locally found animal species. Trees also prevent erosion and produce oxygen for the atmosphere.
