University of Helsinki launches international youth online magazine MyScience.fi
In 2009 LUMA Centre’s Jippo and Luova online magazines received the State Award for Public Information. The LUMA Centre, an umbrella organization coordinated by the University of Helsinki, has launched an English language online magazine MyScience directed at young people. The magazine highlights natural sciences, mathematics and technology; supports youth's activeness and brings Finland to the world map as the top country in science and technology. MyScience online forum is also intended for stirring up discussion.
The online magazine, which presents topics from the viewpoint of youngsters, seeks to attract people from all over the world with an interest in natural sciences, mathematics and technology. It is compiled in cooperation between professionals in the fields of science and technology from universities and businesses.
- Our idea is to produce the magazine on young people's terms. Besides acting as readers, they can also take part in producing the content. Comments and questions, personal blogs and videos are an important part of the magazine, says editor-in-chief Veli-Pekka Vesterinen.
The main themes in 2010 are climate change, renewable natural resources and energy, water, Information and Communication Technology, digitalization and applied mathematics.
The purpose of the national LUMA Centre is to advance the learning and joy of science, mathematics and technology at all levels, and to promote the involvement of children and youth in the field.
