Turku opened the world’s largest media art competition

The European Capital of Culture Turku 2011 awarded the Grand Prix first prize of the media art competition Live2011.com on Sunday. The prize was awarded at the computer event Assembly in Helsinki. The best media art work of the Event Art-category voted by the audience was 'Frameranger' produced by the demo groups CNCD, Fairlight and Orange. The winning art work, which was produced during the four-day Assembly, was acknowledged for its visual effects and technical realization. It received a 3000 Euro prize.

- We want to announce the Grand Prix first prizes in connection to the Demoscene-events and that way bring out some of the creative strength of the youth working in the field, says Jarmo Röksä, the Project Manager of Live2011.com.

The prizes of the competition have a combined total value of over 140,000 Euros, which makes it the world's largest media art and new media competition. Turku, the European Capital of Culture in 2011, wants to use the competition to highlight the importance of social media in meetings between people and in forming a sense of community. The aim is also to emphasize and support the growing field of digital media.


All the art work entered in the competition will be exhibited to the global audience online through the Live 2011.com website, at different media events and in 2011 in Turku, when the city will be the European Capital of Culture.The founder of Linux operating system, Linus Torvalds, has committed himself to be the official patron of the digital Capital of Culture and the Live2011.com Grand Prix.
