Tampere seeks to become a carbon neutral city
Tampereen Keskusareena Oy The Central Arena and the business quarter designed to be built over the railway line in the centre of Tampere will be implemented as a case study of energy efficient building.– About two thirds of the renewable energy would consist of wood chips and other wood energy, which we hope to acquire from our own and our neighbouring municipalities’ forests, says Mayor of Tampere Timo P. Nieminen.
Other significant energy sources would be wind power and waste water heat recovery, as well as energy generated from sludge and by waste burning. These are intended to be utilized at the central wastewater treatment plant, which is currently being planned, and at Tammervoima waste plant.
Tampere will also invest in energy efficient building. The city will commit itself to building all its new properties in alignment with the energy class A requirements, in addition to which it also challenges all private builders to take part in the initiative. All renovations will be carried out with the aim of improving energy-efficiency and the residents will be tempted to carry out energy renovations through different competitions. Next year Tampere will also see the emergence of Finland’s first passive energy kindergarten.
Sitra has committed itself to cooperating with Tampere during the ECO2 project’s startup phase of 2010-2012. The Executive Director of Sitra’s Energy Programme Jukka Noponen says that Sitra is involved in several nationally and locally important projects, which promote the reduction of energy consumption.
– Tampere has an excellent opportunity to become a national and international example of energy-efficiency. A specific point that interested Sitra in the ECO2 project was Tampere’s readiness to include energy-efficiency thinking and emissions reduction comprehensively in all decision making within the city management, says Noponen.
