Stora Enso resumes production at Sunila pulp mill
StoraEnsoForest products company Stora Enso says that it will resume production at its Sunila pulp mill in Kotka. The mill has not been used since April 2009. According to Stora Enso, the market situation for pulp has improved since the spring, and the mill will be restarted by the end of the year.
However, long-term uncertainties with respect to the market situation and the profitability of the plant persist. Similar uncertainties prevail also in regards to accessing reasonably priced timber in Finland. Stora Enso will reassess the future of the mill next spring.
- We are very aware of the fact that although the mill is being restarted, a level of uncertainty will persist for the employees, and we are very sorry for that. However, we consider this option on the whole as the best alternative for our employees right now, says the Country Manager of Stora Enso Finland, Juha Vanhainen in the company's press release.
- We hope that long-term measures will soon be found to secure the viability of the forest products industry in Finland and also that a favorable long-term solution concerning Russian wood customs can be reached. These issues could also extend the life-time of Sunila Mill.
