Smart Map guides tourists in Lappeenranta
sxcTourists visiting the beautiful south-eastern Finnish city Lappeenranta will enjoy a very unique guiding experience this summer. The programme, which was developed by Jayden Khakurel, a student in Lappeenranta University of technology, transmits guidance and information directly to the user's mobile phone.
- Smart Map looks just like a regular map, but it contains much more information. This information can be activated via mobile phone, tells Project Director Eeva Pihlajaniemi from Lappeenranta Business Services.
The Smart Map offers guidance for instance on local services, weather and sights. The service is directed primarily to tourists. It functions in three languages.
The application is the first of its kind in the whole world. According to Pihlajaniemi the systems has been tested in a small restaurant in Italy, but this is the first Smart Map project operating on such a large scale.
The Smart Map uses Near Field Communication (NFC)-technology, which is well known for instance from bar codes. Over a hundred Smart Maps are placed in Lappeenranta Sandcastle at the city harbour and are ready to be used by adventurous tourists.
