Simulators prepare hospital personnel

Nordic Simulators Nordic Simulators' simulation exercises train health care personnel.
A range of simulation exercises now forms part of the everyday training of health care professionals. Doctors, nurses and army medics are trained using simulators built by the Lahti-based company Nordic Simulators.

For its simulator training, Nordic Simulators builds an authentic hospital environment where the training takes place. Simulation dolls, representing live patients, are placed there together with complete monitoring systems which are used to assess the trainees’ performance.

- Using the simulators we can prepare the trainees in an authentic environment. The procedure is videoed and the results can then be replayed with the participants, explains Nordic Simulators’ Technical Director Jani Wallenius.

- The exercises can be adapted as desired and each simulation centre is constructed to meet the customer’s needs. In simulations carried out for the Defence Forces, medics’ performances in a field surgery were assessed. An authentic battlefield environment, for example, was augmented with smoke and the noise of explosions, continues Mr Wallenius.

He goes on to explain that the services provided by Nordic Simulators are unique in their scale. The company’s simulations bring the tools used in health care together into a single, cohesive whole. So far the company has mainly been active within the bounds of Finland, but it has already taken steps out into the rest of Europe.

- Europe offers great potential for us. It looks as if there is a demand in many countries for the sort of complete package we offer, Mr Wallenius concludes.
