Sello shopping mall in Espoo is the first European shopping mall to be granted the Gold level ‘LEED for Existing Buildings’ certification for ecologically sustainable operation. Sello collected green building points for instance for its excellent public transport connections, green energy, energy consumption management, efficient water usage and recycling and sorting facilities available both for the shopping centre’s entrepreneurs and customers.

– It’s fantastic that the active, green initiative of Sello’s owners and entrepreneurs has now been acknowledged also officially, and even with such high points that entitle us to receive the Gold level LEED certification. We consider the acknowledgement as a kind of a springboard in the endeavor to find even better environmental solutions, says Sello mall’s Managing Director Matti Karlsson.

– One of the project’s highlights was the transition to 100 percent carbon neutral energy, and the implementation of extensive energy efficiency procedures. We also developed our environmental governance system for instance in regard to ecological cleaning, outdoor maintenance and waste management, Karlsson tells.

– Internationally speaking, there are thousands of environmentally certified buildings, but only a handful of operational shopping malls with LEED certification. For this reason our achievement is truly significant even on a global scale, says Tuomas Suur-Uski, Project Manager LEED AP at Pöyry. Energy consulting company Pöyry has been responsible for the external consulting required for LEED certification.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a respected green building certification system, providing a framework for identifying and implementing practical green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. The certification is awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council.
