Sara Pathirane wins Young Artists’ Competition
A first year student of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts Sari Pathirane won the first prize in this year's Young Artists' Competition. The awarded artwork of the 23-year old artist was called TILA1: Moving towards a landscape. Pathirane matriculated from an arts highs school and has been practicing painting from the age of 15.
The Young Artists' Competition was held for the tenth time. This year's competition was entered by record-breaking 245 young artists of under 30 with a total of 682 artworks. A member of the jury, Paula Holopainen considered the final decision very difficult this year. The quality of the artworks was exceptionally high.
Pathirane's artwork was considered unique for its layered colours, versatile brush techniques, sensitive touch and interesting composition. The piece stood out for its mystical atmosphere, with an intriguingly posed recumbent figure.
The winning piece of the Young Artists' Competition as well as the artworks of the finalists are exhibited until June 18th at Mediatori in Helsinki. The competition's supporter Basware will add the winning artwork to its art collection and pay Pathirane a 3000 Euro reward for it.
