Samsung and VTT piloting eco-campus model in Finland

VTT is aiming to make Otaniemi a self-sufficient eco-campus by the 2030. VTT is aiming to make Otaniemi a self-sufficient eco-campus by the 2030.

Samsung C & T Corporation and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland are co-operating in an international project that looks for solutions to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. The parties have signed a framework agreement to co-ordinate a pilot project in Espoo, Finland. An international consortium is investing one million Euros in project based in Otaniemi campus.

— We are engaged in a major development project that is looking for new instruments and technologies to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. The aim is to significantly reduce the real estate used by the energy and carbon emissions, says VTT's Senior Researcher Janne Peltonen.

— In the first phase the current real estate environment will be taken over by sensor networks, and monitoring for metering. Buildings integrate with a wide range of technologies such as wireless data technologies. We utilize a wide range of energy, electricity, electronics and ICT skills. The project will offer Finnish companies export potential, as the solutions developed during the pilot is intended to showcase and sell worldwide, says VTT's Senior Researcher Jorma Pietiläinen.

The aim of the pilot project is to make Otaniemi campus area emission-free and completely self-sufficient in energy by 2030. By then, energy efficiency of buildings should be top notch and the real estate associated with the use of information to be utilized in a high standard.
