Sami Hyypiä to join forces with Bayer Leverkusen
Lehtikuva/Markku UlanderSami Hyypiä has brought an end to a decade long association with Liverpool, and join the German Bundesliga at Bayer Leverkusen. The transfer will give Hyypiä at least two years of effective playing time. It is great news for Leverkusen, and also for the Finnish national team, which is trying to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Hyypiä is positive about the transfer from England to Germany. -I will have an opportunity to get to know an exceptionally traditional football country. If I ever decide to do coaching, this will be hugely beneficial for me, comments the 35-year old world class defender.
Hyypiä’s contract with Leverkusen will take effect in the summer. Experts agree that Hyypiä, who is still exuding with enthusiasm to carry on playing, has made the right decision. He will get a chance to prove his place in Germany and in the European football fields rather than remaining a makeshift player at Liverpool.
Hyypiä emphasises his continuing support for Liverpool. He has decided to take his mind off the German Bundesliga and will give his everything for Liverpool in the effort to qualify for the Champions League.
Hyypiä, one of Liverpool’s icons, is one of the rare non-British captains of Champions League teams. This has created a strong bond between Hyypiä and his team. The defender did not want to break that bond by switching into another team in Britain.
Liverpool, “The Reds” is known for its jubilee matches, which are played in honour of each player, who has remained with the team for a whole decade. The details of Hyypiä’s jubilee have not been published yet.
Hyypiä has brought in a lot of publicity for Finland and the Finnish national team during his long, international career.
