Ruukki Group constructs two chrome furnaces and a power plant in South Africa
MCC Chinese metallurgy giant MCC has operated in Africa for 40 years already.Under the framework agreement, MCC will be the procurement and construction contractor for the construction of two 70 megawatt, single electrode submerged arc DC furnaces with two tap holes. The design and engineering company GLPS is in charge of the design works and detailed engineering of the furnaces.
Ruukki Group and MCC will negotiate the conversion of the framework agreement into a formal contract once the detailed design and engineering has been completed. Ruukki is in the process of choosing a site for the furnaces, expecting to make a final decision about the construction site by the end of 2010.
In order to secure the energy supply of its South African production plants, Ruukki intends to build a 250 megawatt power plant. Under the framework agreement, MCC will be the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project. MCC will also conduct a feasibility study for the project.
– We believe that owning a power plant is critical for our growth plans as it will ensure a consistent supply of power to our furnaces at a competitive rate, comments Alwyn Smit, CEO of Ruukki Group.
