Ruka opens Finnish skiing season
Ruka First snow ski tracks have been opened in exceptionally many places.The Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE reports that depending on the snow conditions, also Iso-Syöte in Northern Ostrobothnia will open its slopes this Saturday. Most of the other northern Finnish skiing resorts aim to open their slopes in November. In addition to downhill skiing, cross-country skiing is a possibility in different parts of Northern Finland.
Most of last week’s open ski tracks are located in Levi and Saariselkä. Cross-country skiing is possible already for instance in Ylläs, Pyhä and Paljakka. According to the Finnish Ski Area Association, for this time of the year exceptionally many first snow ski tracks have been opened already.
Cross-country skiers at Ruka will get a chance to take over the tracks and trails, when Sokos Hotel Kuusamo opens its first snow ski track, which is made of preserved snow. The well lit track has been realized in cooperation with Kuusamo municipality. It is 2,5 kilometers long. As soon as the ground is covered by natural snow, the track will be joined into Kuusamo’s other ski track network. A sprint competition, which will be held for professional skiers this Saturday, will officially inaugurate the tracks. The sprint opens this year’s skiing competition season in Finland.
