Roaming in EU more affordable from July onwards

sxc Holidays in EU countries should no longer bring about unreasonable phone bills
Making and receiving mobile phone calls, sending SMSs and using data services will become cheaper within the European Union. The new EU roaming decree will take effect in the beginning of July.

According to the new price ceiling, the Eurotariff, the maximum charge for roaming within the EU is 0,5246 Euros per minute for phone calls made. Receiving phone calls may cost maximum of 0,2318 Euros per minute.

Sending SMSs within the European Union will cost a maximum 0,1342 Euros per SMS. Receiving SMSs abroad abides free of charge.

The new decree will also assign a price ceiling for the use of mobile data within the EU. The tariff will be based on the wholesale prices which the network operators charge each other, so the customers save when the wholesale prices drop.

The clients' possibilities of sparing themselves from unexpected bills as well as their ability to follow up on the accumulated usage will be improved significantly.

Telecompanies have hitherto informed their customers of the international tariffs with automated price advice upon the client's arrival to a foreign network. In the future the operators are required to send their clients also the basic tariff information for international SMSs and dataservices.

The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority monitors the adhering to the liability of the newly set decree.
