Rauma Shipyard builds a research vessel for South Africa
stxeurope.com In addition to laboratories the multi-purpose vessel will also have a shelter and landing area for two Puma class helicopters, a gym, a library, and a small hospital.STX Finland Oy and the South African Department of Environmental Affairs have signed a contract for the construction of a Polar Supply and Research Vessel. The ship will value approximately 116 million Euros and its employing effect will be about 600 man-years. The ship will be built in STX Rauma shipyard and it is expected to be ready for delivery in spring 2012.
The ship will be a multi-purpose vessel, operating for instance as a supply and research vessel, icebreaker, expedition vessel and as a passenger ship. The ice-strengthened vessel will be approximately 134 meters long and it will accommodate a crew of 45 and up to 100 researchers or passengers.
The Polar Supply and Research Vessel will be used to carry scientists and research equipment from the South African National Antarctic Programme in the sea area between South Africa, the Antarctic islands and the Antarctica. The ship can spend several months out at sea. It will also be equipped to act as a mobile laboratory, where scientist can carry out different kinds of onboard marine research.
The contract is one of the biggest civilian trade agreements between Finnish industries and South Africa.
