Raisio elucidates carbon footprints by color codes

Carbon footprint meter elucidates the climate impact of the product.

Raisio is the very first food producer in Finland that has marked a carbon footprint meter on its products. The color code tells about the size of the product's carbon footprint. With the meter Raisio aspires to help consumers in making ecological decisions also in regards to foodstuffs.

According to the recent Climate Focus Nordic-research two out of five Finns are already prepared to take an everyday action towards the wellbeing of the environment.

If the meter, which has been marked onto the packaging, shows green, the product has a small carbon footprint, while shades of yellow and orange indicate a bigger carbon footprint. This way the consumers are able to see, with only once glance, the climate impact of the product they are about to purchase.

- The carbon footprint marking of Raisio's products and the ever increasing need for information have created a foundation for the traffic light-resembling carbon footprint meter. With just one glance consumers are informed of the level of carbon dioxide emissions the product has caused while being processed. We wish that as many companies as possible would adopt this kind of a graphic way of speaking of the ecologicality of different products, tells the CEO of Raisio Oyj Matti Rihko.

Raisio began marking carbon emission information on its products already in 2008. The CO2e -label will be replaced with the new carbon footprint meter during 2010.
