Promising results for the treatment of HIV positive patients
TEKES / MATIAS UUSIKYLÄTampere-based FIT Biotech Oy has published promising research results on the treatment of HIV infection. The biotechnology company has succeeded in developing a therapeutic vaccination, which reduces the virus count of HIV-positive patients.
The results, which were published at the XVIII International AIDS 2010 Conference in Vienna, indicate that thanks to the DNA-based vaccine technology developed by the company the effect of the treatment may last for over two years. FIT Biotech carried out research on previously untreated HIV-positive patients in South Africa.
The clinically significant results reveal that the DNA vaccine treatment reduces the viral load, while increasing the number of CD4 cell count.
- These research results are very encouraging, offering new hope to many HIV-infected individuals, who have never before been treated with medication. Thanks to the treatment the progression from HIV infection to AIDS can be held back by up to two years, tells Dr. Eftyhia Vardas, the Principal Investigator of FIT Biotech's clinical study in Johannesburg.
Established in 1995, Biotech operates in Tampere, Finland and Tarto, Estonia. The privately held biotechnology company develops immunotherapies for HIV/AIDS and other viral diseases.
