The Baltic Sea Action Summit held in Helsinki on February 10th brought together heads of states and governments, representatives of the business sector and NGOs to a new kind of summit. President of the Republic of Finland, Tarja Halonen signed a personal commitment for improving the conditions of the Baltic Sea. Halonen proposed for instance an annual Baltic Sea Day to raise awareness and to strengthen the commitments made for the recovery of the invaluable marine environment.

President Halonen’s first commitment was to convene the Baltic Sea Action Summit together with Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and the Baltic Sea Action Group. Halonen also committed to promoting the Baltic Sea Action Summit process for a cleaner Baltic Sea also after the Helsinki Summit together with non-governmental organisations and business enterprises.

Halonen supports also the efforts of the young generation in the revival of the Baltic Sea, encourages youth to take part in voluntary activities, and the members of Parliament and other elected bodies as well as those participating in electoral campaigns to work for a cleaner Baltic Sea. The President promises also to emphasise the implementation of the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan when in contact with her colleagues from the Baltic Sea countries.

In addition to her personal commitment President Halonen gives her full support to the Prime Minister Vanhanen’s commitment, which was published earlier on this the week. He promises to take an action towards improving the marine environment of the Archipelago Sea.

The new kind of summit, which brings together political leaders, companies and organizations, brought seven heads of states and governments to Helsinki. All the parties taking part in the summit have made a commitment for taking a concrete action towards improving the conditions in the Baltic Sea. This far over 130 commitments have been made.
