Pöyry signs major contracts to Tanzania and Mexico

Finnish consulting and engineering company Pöyry has been awarded a consulting services contract for providing institutional support to the Rural Energy Agency (REA) in Tanzania. The assignment includes two phases of services with a total value of approximately 1.2 million euros.
The first, two-year phase will commence in March 2010. The primary objective of the assignment is to provide technical assistance in developing and building the technical and institutional capacity of the REA for effective execution of services within its remit. The aim is also to develop institutional readiness for implementing and monitoring the stipulations of the Tanzanian government's rural energy policy.
Assistance will also be provided in developing guidance and methods for preparation of bid packages for rural energy projects. According to Pöyry the development of cooperation procedures between the REA and its official regulator, EWURA are of particular importance. Procedures for sequencing of licensing and subsidy awards will be elaborated with EWURA.
Pöyry has extensive experience in the development of institutional frameworks and policy for the promotion of rural energy activities in different parts of Africa and Asia.
Pöyry has also signed a 1.7 million euro contract for taking on project management of a new railway line in Celaya City, Mexico. The contract was awarded by the Mexican Project Management Office for Construction.
The services provided by Pöyry cover project management, environmental studies and authorisations as well as follow-up, monitoring and information management. Pöyry will also be responsible for coordination of the project and will prepare the technical specifications for bid requests to support the client during the selection of contractors. The services are expected to be completed by June 2012.
