Pöyry engineers a pumped storage plant project in Austria

Pöyry has been awarded contracts by VERBUND-Austria Hydro Power AG both for the provision of engineering services and for site supervision during the construction period of Reißeck II pumped storage plant. The total value of the two contracts is approximately 9.2 million euro. Pöyry's engineering services comprise the project's execution design and as-built design.

The pumped storage power plant Reißeck II connects two existing storage power plants: Reißeck-Kreuzeck storage power plant and Malta power plant main stage. The new pumped storage plant uses the existing reservoir of "Großer Mühldorfersee" of Reißeck-Kreuzeck as its upper reservoir. The existing reservoir "Gößkar" of Malta main stage will serve as its lower reservoir.

Water is led from the upper reservoir via a 5 km long power tunnel and pressure shaft to the powerhouse cavern, which is equipped with 2 sets of reversible Francis-pump turbines with 215 mega-watts each. The downstream connection to the waterway of Malta-main stage is through a 203 m long pressure tunnel.
