The sea channel leading into the Port of Hamina will be realigned and dredged to 12 metre immersion. The implementation of the channel project is carried out by the Finnish Maritime Administration while the dock works are commissioned by Port of Hamina Ltd.

Deepening of the channel is particularly important for the operation of Hamina oil port. As the trade of liquid bulk cargoes develops the trend moves towards larger commercial shipment sizes, which means that bigger tankers are used. By deepening the channel the port's customers can use the bigger Panamax-class ships.

The channel and dock works, which began in Hamina in the summer, will be finished by the end of 2010. The contractor of the project is Terramare Oy, which is a company specialized in dredging, underwater drilling and blasting, port construction and various dredging methods in different soil types. The Port of Hamina is one of Terramare's biggest contracts in Finland and it employs 70-80 employees.

The Dutch-owned dredging specialist Terramare Oy is one of the leading contractors in Finland and other Nordic countries. Last year the company had a 93,3 million Euro turnover and it employed 281 employees.
