Pentagon design The award-winning lamp was based on the LED-expertise of Researcher Sami Suihkonen. An innovative LED-lamp designed by the design agency Pentagon Design and Helsinki University of Technology TKK has won the first prize in the Nordic Luminaire Design Competition Luminord 2009. The competition was set out to challenge its participants in designing a LED-light, which would be suitable for both, indoor and outdoor use.
The first prize was awarded to a lamp titled '22-77°', which changes shape when the LED-bulbs warm up. The lamp's body has a total of 80 LED-blubs, installed onto four cross-shaped two-layer metal parts. The two-layer metal fibers function as the power cord and cooling element for the light bulbs. The fibers straighten when they warm up and regain their curvature in room temperature. The crosses have their own thermal sensors, which enable them to operate symmetrically and evenly.
The design of the award winning light was based on the LED-expertise of Sami Suihkonen, a researcher at Helsinki University of Technology.
- The research and development of energy efficient luminaries, and LED-lights in particular, belong to the cutting-edge research field at the Helsinki University of Technology. Our LED-research is acknowledged internationally, says Suihkonen.
Pentagon Design is a Helsinki-based design agency, whose vibrant design team comprises nine professionals. The team has already designed the most versatile products ranging from Nils Master -lures to Hackman's frying pans.
The Luminord -design competition was organized by the Finnish Lighting Technology Association, the Finnish Association of Architects, the Finnish Association of Interior Designers, the Association of Consulting Electrical Engineers, the Electrical Contractors' Association of Finland, the Finnish Association of Building Owners and Construction Clients and the Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo.
