Outotec and Alunorte awarded for energy efficiency

A user of Outotec calcination technology in alumina production, Brazilian Alunorte S.A. has been awarded for energy efficiency during this year's global industrial technology exhibition at the Hannover Messe, Germany.

– We are extremely happy for Alunorte, with whom we have built a very long and satisfying relationship over many years of working together. The fact that Alunorte was recognized for this prestigious award based on solutions we provided them shows what great partnership can lead to, says Dr. Peter Weber, president of Energy, Light Metals and Environmental Solutions at Outotec.

Alunorte received a special acknowledgement for using optimization processes in its cyclones. Outotec was responsible for designing the alumina calcining processes, in which the separation of particles and gaseous media in the cyclones is more efficient. The improved technology has resulted in 6-percent energy savings for the plant. The improvements to the cyclones have helped Alunorte reduce energy consumption during calcination in its annual production level considerably, by 56 million kilowatt-hours.

Besides the actual energy savings, the jury emphasized also the general relevance of the solution with regard to climate change, the ability to apply the solution to other customers and its economic feasibility.
