Organic tomatoes grow environmentally sustainably
SXCEntrepreneur and organic farmer Esa Kivioja from KKK- Vihannes Ltd. uses condensate heat, which is produced in a food processing factory nearby. Therefore the heating of Kivioja’s greenhouses doesn’t produce any additional emissions which could harm the environment. Entrepreneur Ari Kulmanen from Ikaalisten Luomu has chosen to use peat as the source of heating for his greenhouses. It is generated in a bio-energy power plant nearby.
The electricity for the lighting of the organic tomatoes is produced by hydraulic energy. Electricity usage is cut down for instance by reducing the surface-area used for tomato cultivation during the winter season. Different technical solutions are applied in order to optimize the growing conditions. One of these is for instance the immediate switching off of the electric lights when the natural light from outside reaches a sufficient level.
Also the packaging of the organic tomato is environmentally friendly. A majority of organic tomatoes produced in Finland are packed in environmentally friendly packaging material, which is produced from corn starch. Approximately 1,5 million kilograms of organic tomatoes are grown in Finland every year, which is about 5 per cent of the country’s overall tomato production.
