Ophthalmic pharmaceutical for world market developed at Tampere

santen.com
Santen Pharmaceutical, which produces ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, has signed a worldwide marketing authorization agreement under which distribution will be expanded in Europe and North and South America. Santen, a Japanese company specializing in ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, has the centre of its European business operations and its research and development units located in Finland.

The development unit, which is situated in Tampere, has developed an ophthalmic pharmaceutical called Taflotan for treating increased ocular pressure and glaucoma. Compared with other products, Taflotan is completely free of preservatives, which reduces irritation and dryness in the patient’s eye.

“Taflotan is a good addition to the range of pharmaceuticals for treating glaucoma. At least for those with sensitive eyes the products are a good addition, “says Anja Tuulonen, a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Oulu University.

It is thought that there will be demand for products such as these because 50 per cent of ophthalmic pharmaceuticals are used for treating ocular-pressure diseases. The pharmaceutical being produced at Tampere is already being sold in Japan and part of Europe.
