Lahti Symphony Orchestra has appointed Okko Kamu as its new chief conductor starting in the autumn of 2011, when Jukka-Pekka Saraste’s period as the orchestra’s artistic adviser will end.

Okko Kamu (b. 1946) is a versatile Finnish musician, who started to play music in the age of two. He has conducted almost all of the world’s foremost orchestras and is considered to be one of world’s top conductors.

Kamu agreed with the Department of Culture in the city of Lahti that he will conduct in Lahti for at least eight weeks each year.

At the same time Kamu will be the artistic director of the Lahti international Sibelius Festival. He will be in charge of the symphony orchestra’s tours and recordings.

A chief conductor is somewhat similar to a head coach of an ice hockey team. – Okko Kamu is an incredible talent, who will definitely bring out the very best of us, comments a member of Lahti Symphony Orchestra.
