Number of foreign travellers in Finland increased in 2008

The number of foreign travellers in Finland was 6,1 million in 2008. The number is 6 per cent more than the previous year's corresponding number. The amount of money spent by foreign travellers in Finland increased also by 5 per cent to a total of 1,7 billion Euros.

The information was revealed by a survey carried out by Statistics Finland and the Finnish Tourist Board. The survey was based on interviews of approximately 35 100 foreign travellers as they were about to depart from Finland through the busiest border crossings.   

Most of the foreign travellers arrived from Russia. They were 2,3 million in number, totaling to 13 per cent more than in the previous year.

Foreign travellers spent approximately 55 Euros per day while in Finland. Travellers on work trips spent approximately 69 Euros per day. The average amount of money spent during a holiday in Finland was 284 Euros, while foreign travellers on work trips spent an average of 392 Euros per visit.  

The most money was spent by Russians visiting Finland. They brought in a total of 595 million Euros, which is over a third of the total expenditure of all the foreign travellers. The total expenditure increased by 27 per cent since 2007.
