Nokia invests in Swype technology
swypeincThe world's leading mobile phone manufacturer Nokia will invest on Swype Inc, the developer of an innovative text input technology, based in Seattle, United States. In addition to being funded by Nokia Growth Partners, Swype has also received additional funding of 5.6 million dollars from Nokia's competitor, Samsung Ventures and the private venture capital firm Benaroya Capital.
Seattle-based Swype intends to use the funding for integrating Swype technology into more mobile handsets, ultimately expanding also to other touch and remote screen devices, such as GPS units, TVs and game consoles. Korean Samsung has already launched the market's very first device equipped with the brand new technology, which is the Samsung Omnia II touchscreen smartphone.
Swype's patented technology provides a faster and more intuitive way to input text on touch-screens. The technology involves swiping a finger across a virtual keyboard rather than hitting each key individually, with software that will predict the indented word based on the finger's motion and any pauses or changes of direction.
Swype technology enables the user to enter text at over 30 words per minute, promises the company.
