Nokia and Intel merge their software platforms into Linux-based MeeGo
Nokia.com Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini and CEO of Nokia, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, put the MeeGo software platform into spotlight in Barcelona.According to Nokia and Intel MeeGo software platform boosts the market entry of innovations within the communication and information industry, as well as the development of user interfaces. Nokia and other device manufacturers are expected to launch MeeGo based products to the market later this year. The merged software platform is based on the strategic partnership between Nokia and Intel, which was announced in June 2009.
According to the CEO of Nokia Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo MeeGo offers consumers even wider internet and telecommunications possibilities in new mobile devices.
- Thanks to the open innovation MeeGo will create a leading community, where representatives of many different sectors can meet. MeeGo represents a new era for cordless computers, says Kallasvuo.
The Linux Foundation will maintain the MeeGo software platform as an open source development model, and encourages communities to take active part in the development of the open source code. Intel and Nokia now invite participation in MeeGo from existing Maemo and Moblin global communities and across the communications and computing industries. The developers are able to begin the coding of the MeeGo applications in the Qt environment. The first release of MeeGo is expected in the second quarter of 2010 with devices launching later in the year.
