Niinistö and Haavisto through to second round of presidential elections

LEHTIKUVA / SARI GUSTAFSSON The next president of Finland will be either Sauli Niinistö or Pekka Haavisto
Sauli Niinistö from the National Coalition and Pekka Haavisto from the Green Party were the two candidates who received most votes in the first round of Finland's presidential elections yesterday. In doing so they go through to the second, decisive round of the elections which will take place on February 5th.

Niinistö received 37 % of the votes cast while Haavisto received 18.8 %.

The other candidates received votes as follows:

Paavo Väyrynen, Centre Party, 17.5 %
Timo Soini, True Finns, 9.4 %
Paavo Lipponen, Social Democratic Party, 6.7 %
Paavo Arhinmäki, Left Alliance, 5.5 %
Eva Biaudet, Swedish People’s Party, 2.7 %
Sari Essayah, Christian Democrats, 2.5 %

Election turnout was 72.7 %. Advance voting for the second round begins on January 25th. The new president will take up office in March.
