The next Near Field Communications (NFC) Forum Members Meeting, which takes place from August 31st until September 4th, will be hosted by the city of Oulu. The participants in the forum are estimated to be approximately 150, many of whom are the world's leading NFC developers and representatives of technology enterprises and research institutes. Previous NFC forums have been held for instance in Shanghai, Rome and other metropolises of the world. According to Oulu Innovation a range of events promoting NFC-technology and offering networking possibilities both for Oulu-based and other Finnish companies will take place during the week.

Different Near Field Technology applications have been tested in Finland by the Technical Research Centre of Finland, VTT, the City of Oulu and Nokia with its SmartTouch-research project. A large number of Finnish companies have also been involved in the process. The Finnish NFC-applications have always ranked to the top of the NFC Forum's annual applications contests.

The NFC Forum was established in 2004 to promote the utilization, development and standardization of NFC technology, as well as carrying out research on the possibility of NFC enabled changes in business activity models. The member companies in the forum, which was established by Nokia, Sony and Philips, are already over 150.

NFC is a short-range wireless connectivity technology that evolved from a combination of existing contactless identification and interconnection technologies. Operating at 13.56 MHz and transferring data at up to 424 Kbits/second, NFC provides intuitive, simple, and safe communication between electronic devices.
