Napa on top of the world

Oasis of the Seas will be the biggest cruise ship in the world.
Up to 95 per cent of the world’s shipbuilding uses software produced by the Finnish Napa companies. The company’s customers are all the world’s biggest shipyards, design offices, classification institutions and shipbuilding companies.

The Napa Group, which was established in 1989 and specializes in developing software for the design and operation of ships, last year received the Internationalisation Award of the President of Finland, with 95 per cent of its sales going to international markets. The customers include 400 companies in more than 50 countries.

The roots of the operations lie in Finnish shipbuilding expertise. The Napa companies have succeeded in combining the opportunities presented by know-how in the sector and IT in an innovative way, which has made the company the top name in its field worldwide.

– Lying at the heart of our operations is development work in which the customers are heavily involved. The aim is to improve the safety, efficiency and environmental friendliness of navigation, says Matti Salo, the President of the Group.

Salo says that the Napa companies’ initial design software for ships is used in about 95 per cent of the world’s shipbuilding operations. Operating software for optimizing and monitoring the ships’ performance is used by more than 90 per cent of the world’s cruise ships and car ferries.

Software of the Napa companies is also being used in the design and implementation of world’s biggest cruise ship Oasis of the Seas. The ship, which was ordered by the Royal Caribbean International shipping company and is being built at Turku Shipyard in Finland, will be the world’s most expensive cruise ship once it is ready. It has been compared to a small town.
