Minister of Communication Suvi Lindén to join UN’s Broadband Commission

Lehtikuva/ Jussi Nukari Minister of Communication Suvi Lindén considers her invitation to join the UN Broadband Commission as recognition of Finnish communications policy.
Minister of Communication Suvi Lindén has been invited to join UN’s high-level Broadband Commission for Digital Development. The commission, which is run by top class leaders, aims at finding solutions for creating effective broadband connections and information society services for people in developing countries.

A list of Commission members was published on May 10th at the World Summit on the Information Society, WSIS Forum 2010, in Geneva, Switzerland.

– I am extremely pleased for the invitation to join in this important work. We cannot leave people in the developing countries outside the information society. Broadband connections will improve prosperity in society, market development and economic growth particularly in the developing countries. It is not about technology but people's basic right to information, Minister Lindén says.

Finland was the first country in the world to define Internet access as universal service that must be available to everyone.

– The invitation is an acknowledgement of Finnish communications policy. The core of our policy is to create competitive market conditions but also to take firm measures to ensure everyone’s right to reasonably priced communications services. That is why broadband was made a basic right in Finland. This view has also aroused enormous international interest, notes Minister Lindén.

The UN’s Broadband Commission’s first meeting will be held on July 11th in Geneva. The Commission will report on the results of its work at the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
