Metso to deliver biomass boiler to USA

Lehtikuva / Mikko Stig Metso is a global supplier of sustainable technology and services for mining, construction, power generation, automation, recycling and the pulp and paper industries.

Metso will supply a biomass boiler to the Nacogdoches Generating Facility in Sacul, Texas, USA. The installation features a boiler and a distributed control system. The commercial operation of the plant is scheduled for 2012.

The biomass boiler plant will utilize bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology and will use waste wood from logging and mill activity as well as urban wood waste from clearing, tree trimming and pallets as the main fuel. The plant will produce approximately 100 MW of renewable electric power. Once operational, this boiler will be one of the largest and most efficient biomass boilers in the world.

The Nacogdoches Generating Facility will be owned and operated by Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company in the USA. The plant will supply Austin Energy, Inc. (the city-owned utility) of Austin, Texas with a firm source of renewable electric power under the terms of a 20-year power purchase agreement.
