Metso supplies largest recovered fuel fired boiler

METSO The fuel-fired boiler, like the one pictured, will use recovered fuel from municipal waste

Metso has secured an order from Sweden’s Mälarenergi to deliver the world’s largest recovered- fuel-fired boiler for a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Västerås.

Under the deal, Metso will provide the heating plant that will serve as a base unit to meet the heating power needs of Västerås and Hallstahammar municipalities.

The new boiler, with a fuel input of 167MW, will use circulating fluidised bed (CFB) technology and use recovered fuel prepared from municipal waste.

The boiler also has the possibility to burn biofuel. Compared with current boilers, the new system will give the plant a more flexible fuel mix.

Metso's role will account for 30 per cent of the 300 million euro modernisation work of the CHP plant.

The modernisation is an important investment for Mälarenergi and the city of Västerås, as well as for our customers, says Mälarenergi president Kenneth Jönsson.

The investment will give us a greater fuel mix flexibility. We chose Metso because they fulfilled our requirements regarding price, technology, availability and experience.

The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in the middle of 2014

Mälarenergi is owned by the city of Västerås and provides electricity, district heating and cooling with related services to customers in Västerås Municipality as well as surrounding areas. The company also sells electricity to private and corporate customers throughout Sweden.

Metso is a global supplier of sustainable technology and services for mining, construction, power generation, automation, recycling and the pulp and paper industries.
