The Ministry of Education has allocated its all-time biggest funding, 27,5 million Euros, for building sports facilities in the country. Almost 20 million Euro funding was based on the usual subsection of the Ministry's sport policy and is aimed towards building and facilitating sports and sport promoting activities. Furthermore, 8,3 million Euros were recovered from the unclaimed profits of the National Lottery and added on to the funding.

Minister of Culture and Sports, Stefan Wallin allocated funding to 33 different building projects. The major single project is Helsinki Olympic Stadium. The beginning phase of its renovation project was supported with a grant of 4 million Euros.

The Olympic Stadium was constructed for the 1940 Olympics, which were then cancelled due to World War II. The Helsinki Olympics were eventually held in 1952.

- Helsinki Olympic Stadium is in the spotlight as the main stage of the Finnish sport scene. The Ministry of Education supports that its position as such should be maintained. Therefore the stadium's thoroug renovation and modernisation are necessary for it to meet the high standards of future sports events, comments Wallin.
