Lemminkäinen excavates for Western Metro in Helsinki

After quite a competition the first contract of the Western Metro excavation project was awarded to Lemminkäinen Infra. The contract, which is worth approximately 10 million Euros, was the lowest of all the offers.

The invitation for tenders was sent to five companies in the business, four out of which submitted their offers on time.

The contract includes the excavation of two 800-metre-long track tunnels between Ruoholahti metro station and Salmisaarenranta, as well as an access tunnel. The combined length of the tunnels will be nearly 14 kilometers. The excavated bedrock totals to about three million cubic meters.

The Western Metro construction project will commence in November in Ruoholahti, near to Länsisatama port in southwestern central Helsinki. The original plan was to start the construction in Espoo, which however was delayed due to local complaints on the work scheme.

According to the tentative schedule the excavation work will be completed in May 2011. The cost estimation for the Western Metro is 714 million Euros. Upon its completion the metro will transport nearly 100,000 passengers every day.
