Kuopio declares School Peace for 2009-2010
Lehtikuva / Jukka Ritola In 1999 School Peace was declared in Kaisaniemi, Helsinki.National School Peace for the whole school year of 2009-2010 is declared on Wednesday August 19th in Kuopio. The declaration of School Peace, which has been done since 1990, has a purpose of reminding everyone that each member of the school community has the right to a safe and equal learning environment.
The declaration of School Peace, which has been created by pupils themselves, will be read out in Finnish and Swedish. The pupil, who has been elected for the task is one of Kuopio's prefects. In addition to the main event, several smaller events take place in different schools and regions all over Finland. The declaration will also be broadcasted on the radio.
The School Peace-programme is carried out in cooperation with Mannerheim League for Child Welfare, Ministry of Education, the Police Department of the Ministry of the Interior and Folkhälsan. The programme has been designed to emphasize the role of each pupil, home, teacher, school staff and cooperators in the maintenance of peaceful atmosphere in schools. In addition to that, the programme's aim is to place attention on the operational culture of schools and the psychological and physical safety of schools throughout the school year.
Every school can design its own School Peace-programme by using material provided on the designated website www.koulurauha.fi (in Finnish and Swedish).
