Kone modernizes Metro Rome

Kone Corporation

Kone has won a contract from Metro Rome for the maintenance of all units, such as escalators, autowalks, elevators and stair lifts, which are installed in the Rome underground lines.

The three-year maintenance contract is worth over 12 million euros, including modernization activities which account for more than half of the amount. The modernization order was booked in the second quarter of 2009.

The client, Met.Ro., Metropolitana di Roma S.p.A., manages the public transportation service of lines A and B of the Roman underground and of the regional railways Roma-Lido (Ostia), Roma-Giardinetti and Roma-Viterbo. The company transports almost a million passengers in Rome and Lazio every day.

The recently signed maintenance contract is based on previous successful cooperation between Kone and Met.Ro. In February 2006 the Italians bought 32 escalators and four autowalks from the Finnish company. The contract was the biggest single modernization project that Kone ever carried out in Italy.
