KONE joins the World Business Council for Sustainable Development

KONE, one of the leading companies in the elevator and escalator industry, has joined the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The council is a global association focusing on business and sustainable development, with about 200 member companies from all over the world.

The membership will give KONE a chance to collaborate and participate in a global network on topics of sustainability such as energy efficiency in buildings and urban infrastructure, the company reasons its membership.

–  Buildings’s share of the world’s energy consumption is 40 per cent. Elevators and escalators typically account for 5 percent of this consumption. The WBCSD provides KONE an excellent platform to exchange ideas about new eco-efficient solutions to reduce the energy consumption of buildings. This offers us more opportunities to contribute to sustainable urban development, comments KONE President & CEO Matti Alahuhta.

Other Finnish members of the WBCSD are Fortum, Nokia, Metsäliitto and Stora Enso. The council is chaired by Jorma Ollila, the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Shell and Nokia.
