Kilke jamboree takes over Evo Youth Camping Center
Sami Tarkiainen Kilke’s family village allows also under 12 years old to take part in the camp. Most of the campers are 12-22 years old scouts.Kilke is the sixth Finnish jamboree. The previous camp “Tarus” was held in 2004. This year the Guides and Scouts of Finland, GSF celebrates its 100th year anniversary in honour of which also those who are not members of the scout movement are welcomed to participate in the camp.
The camp programme includes an overnight hike, camp routines and a plenty more. For instance circus tricks, rocket shooting and a blacksmith’s workshop are part of the camp’s program.
The smooth running of Kilke camp needs a plenty of active contributions. Adult campers are for instance in charge of radio broadcasting, and work also as doctors, firemen, micro-computer support personnel, fire breathers and live role-playing game characters. Four hired office personnel assist the volunteers in their tasks.
According to the Staff Manager at Kilke Katleena Kortesuo the camp offers possibilities for instance for learning the basics of a future profession.
Nobody gets paid for carrying out tasks. All the participants, including the camp manager Juha Lehto, pay a camp fee.
– We aren’t scouts for money. We are scouts for the friendships, new experiences and for our own personal development, says Kortesuo.
Kilke is the first event held at the recently opened Evo Youth Camping Center. The Metsähallitus Natural Heritage Services and the GSF have cooperated for over a year in building the area’s infrastructure. For instance fixed water, sewage, electricity and telecommunications network have been established in the area.
According to Jere Rauhala, Superintendent at Metsähallitus, Kilke camp, and other activities at Evo Youth Camping Center increase the area’s recognizability. The visitor numbers are expected to increase in the coming years.
