Jyväskylä wins an international urban lighting competition in South Korea
jkl.fi / Juhana KonttinenThe City of Jyväskylä mesmerized as the winner of the international city.people.light - competition in Gwangju, South Korea. The award, which was presented in recognition of top class development work on urban lighting solutions, and the accompanying 10,000 Euro prize was given to representatives of the City of Jyväskylä at the annual general meeting of the Lighting Urban Community International, LUCI on October 19th.
The jury, which consisted of international lighting specialists, gave Jyväskylä recognition for its outstanding utilization city lighting in developing sustainable city environment. Lighting is a central element in Jyväskylä's city identity. It is energy efficient, light pollution reducing and safety enhancing, thus elevating the quality of living for the city's inhabitants.
In addition to having developed unique lighting solutions within large-scale urban planning, Jyväskylä was acknowledged for making use of lighting also in smaller public spaces, such as parks, where light has a direct impact on people.
The city.people.light-competition is held annually by the multinational electronics company Philips and the international LUCI. Twenty cities took part in this year's competition. The second prize was awarded to Hangzhou in China and the third prize to Lachen in Switzerland. Last year's winner was South Korean capital city Soul.
