‘Hot in the City’ introduces a new way of creating social networks
VTT, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, has developed a new networking method using NFC technology. The new ‘Hot in the City’-solution allows its users to create friendship networks by the touch of a NFC-phone. Several patents have been applied for the knowhow of the application and it is accessible for instance via Facebook.NFC technology requires items to be touched by a phone, thus for instance activating different services. The first applications of the technology have worked for instance in making payments and purchasing tickets.
VTT’s ‘Hot in the City’ is the world’s first phone-operated NFC technology solution for social media. It has recently won the international NFC Forum Global Competition. NFC Forum is an international organization, which aims to develop and standardize NFC technology.
Pilot projects using NFC technology have benefited for instance the elderly, visually impaired, parents of school children and passengers in public transport. Experts expect this kind of technology to be in widespread use already in two-three year’s time. This will be possible once the outline of its use is finalized and devices featuring NFC technology have entered the market.
