Hormos Medical’s Ospemifene hits a worldwide jackpot

Pharmaceutical invention Ospemifene from Turku-based pharmaceutical development company Hormos Medical Ltd has been licensed under a significant international license agreement. Hormos Medical’s American parent company QuatRX Pharmaceuticals Company has published its entry into a worldwide license agreement to develop and market the medicine together with the Japanese pharmaceutical company Shionogi & Company.

Under the terms of the agreement, Shionogi will have worldwide marketing rights to Ospemifene. QuatRx will receive an up-front payment of 25 million dollars and is eligible to receive in excess of 100 million dollars in development and regulatory milestone payments. QuatRx will also be eligible to receive additional payments for approval of ospemifene outside the US, as well as sales milestones and royalties on product sales.

Ospemifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, also called SERM. It is the first non-estrogenous alternative to treating the symptoms of post-menopausal vulvovaginal atrophy, VVA. The medicine was invented and developed by Hormos Medical located at Turku Science Park.

— Ospemifene shows how an investment of less than a hundred million euros in a period of ten years can be recovered double over two subsequent years. After that, successful sales ensure a continuous flow of income for over ten years, which will pay back the initial investment tenfold even without any additional investments, says CEO of Hormos Medical, Risto Lammintausta.
