The signatories to the Charter commit themselves for instance to reducing their carbon footprint in the ICT sector by 30 per cent by the year 2020.
Helsinki's official representative at the conference was Deputy Mayor Pekka Sauri. According to Sauri, this level of energy reduction in ICT is a realistic goal, and the Charter is in line with Helsinki's strategic goals.
The Charter, which was prepared by EUROCITIES network, was signed by more than 20 cities, including Amsterdam, Malaga, Bologna and Riga in addition to Helsinki. More cities are expected to join.
There are also other energy efficiency promoting projects in Helsinki. Electricity company Helsingin Energia's new computer hall, which is currently under construction, has gained publicity for its progressiveness. The heat generated by the computers is piped as district heating to the city's buildings. Moreover, major producer of district heat in Helsinki, Vuosaari power plant, with an energy efficiency of 93 per cent, has gained reputation as one of the most efficient and cleanest plants in the world.
