Good working conditions at small companies

MEK

According to a survey carried out by the Federation of Finnish Enterprises, employees think that working conditions at small companies are particularly good. The smaller the company, the more open and confidential the relations between employer and employee.

At the same time employees at small companies feel that their own chances of influencing the development of operations at the workplace and the division of jobs are good.

The survey reveals that employees at small companies are more likely than others to think that jobs are well organized, even though bigger companies are better equipped to organize and administer work. Employees in small companies do less unrewarded overtime than those at other companies. Employees at small companies are less inclined to think that the pace of work has become more frenetic.

The number of cases of workplace bullying and absences through sickness is also fewer in small companies.

This information came to light in a survey by the Federation of Finnish Industries that is based on information from interviews in a survey on working conditions by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. In the interviews employees were asked for their assessments of the development of the quality of Finnish working life and wage-earners' working conditions.

Finnish entrepreneurs say that small and medium-sized companies have a crucial role to play in the changing labour market. SMEs employ more than 60 per cent of the workforce in the private sector and most of the new jobs in recent years have been created at SMEs.
